I use IMAP with fetchmail from home quite successfully:

poll mooneye.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au with protocol imap and timeout 30 and
#poll mermaid.waix.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au with protocol imap and timeout 30 and
       user michael there with password ******** and folder Mail/_home is
michael here, fetchall ssl

On UCC I have a .procmailrc that shuffles a copy of all mail into a separate
folder so that me reading UCC mail from elsewhere doesn't interfere.
