It's better that way than not... 

It's not a question of whether it's "better" to let the home partition
or the mail partition fill up, either has to be fixed ASAP.

If the mail partition fills up, it's urgent but not important. It gets
people's attention to fix it, but it's OK, mail will be delivered
later. However - if there's no way to free up space other than by
deleting other people's mail, that's a problem.

If the home partition fills up, it's important but not urgent. It stops
you from doing all sorts of things, but the people who can fix it may
not notice for hours. However - it's always easy to find _something_ to
delete. (640MB of webcam archives now gone, other times it's core
files, web caches or compressing large files)

OBTW - it's time we bought some more space...
