Better to say something more accurate, like we noticed after a week of
use, there were a number of copies of gdm running, and lsof showed that
combined, it had over 2000 files open.

I suspect what is actually happening is that people are killing
xsessions unfriendly-like, leaving gdm's running all over the place for
the dead sessions, with each one holding several tens of files open.
