It's always worked for me.
If you want a bigger hammer...
noac,actimeo=0
or if you really have problems,
noac,actimeo=0,acdirmax=0,acdirmin=0,acregmax=0,actregmin=0
but I've never had to go beyond 'noac'.
Of course I wouldn't actually do mail over NFS, I'd use IMAP for that :-)
